2014 Commissioning Contest Winner | ERBERK ERYILMAZ
Apollo Chamber Players is pleased to announce the winner of its inaugural International Commissioning Contest, Turkish-born composer ERBERK ERYILMAZ. The contest, part of the organization’s 20×2020 commissioning project, drew an incredible response: 254 submissions from 30 countries, including representation from 36 US states.

September 21, 2014 — To me, actually citing the melodies of the folk songs in ‘Five Folksongs in Counterpoint’ didn’t heighten the music and, maybe, felt like it pandered to the audience a bit. The Counterpoint was largely lackadaisical, with some notable exceptions. WE GOT A LIBBY WORLD PREMIERE! The above recording is the actual commissioned piece as played that night.
Quintet in E-flat Major for 2 violins, 2 violas and cello by Antonin Dvorak kept me awake and alert, in spite of the slip-ups. I was moved and happy to have heard it played by Apollo Chamber and their guest artist, the tall fiddler.
